“The lion’s share of the history of the 21st century is going to play out in Asia,” states Kurt Campbell, the former assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, on this week’s Asia Unbound podcast. Asia is now the top market for U.S. exports and home to 60 percent of the world’s top arms importers.
Campbell argues that the United States cannot afford to be distracted from its vital interests in the region at this decisive moment and must work with its partners to uphold the principles of freedom of navigation, the peaceful resolution of disputes, and respect for global commons. Campbell, who now serves as the chairman and CEO of The Asia Group, was an architect of the U.S. “pivot” (or “rebalance”) to Asia and articulates the rationale behind the strategy in his new book, The Pivot: The Future of American Statecraft in Asia. Listen below to hear why continued U.S. interaction with the Asia Pacific is more important than ever.
